Southwestern Slovenia covers the areas of Kras plateau and Vipava valley. Geologically speaking, Kras plateau is composed mainly of limestone and it gave the name to Karst phenomena worldwide. You can find many depressions, rocks, boulders and stonewals everywhere around. Forests that had been almost completely cut down in the past are nowadays growing back and covering high percentage of the region.
Vipava valley is neighbouring Kras plateau in the north and has various types of terrain to offer. From relativelly ˝green˝ forests abundant with erosion features to steep slopes of the Valley scattered with numerous boulders of all sizes. While Kras plateau is only 5-15km away from Mediteranean coast, Vipava valley is located a bit farther away but at somewhat lower altitude (just about 100 m a.s.l.) Therefore both areas are known for mild winters with only rare snowfalls. Apart from favorable climate and beautiful landscapes both areas invite with quality wine and gastronomic offer.

Why to visit this area:

Kras
Winter evening on Kras plateau

1. Winter training possibility.
2. Attractive training areas. Majority of them allow faster running than extremely difficult areas around Idrija or in the Alps but the technical challenge is still high. However, first mentioned areas will be available also in winter time in case there is no snow cover.
3. Vicinity of towns at the seaside (Piran, Izola, Trieste) or just any non built up part of the coast may offer you a place for relaxing afternoon near the sea, while some other points of interest as the village of Štanjel, caves (like Postojnska jama or Škocjanske jame), Lipizzaner horse stud farm in Lipica or just a visit to one of the local wine cellars will make you more familiar with the area.
