Staying in Nova Gorica. Nova Gorica is a town at the end of Vipava valley, situated between the Alps and the Adriatic sea, right on Slovenian/Italian border. As a matter of fact, one part of the city stands in Italy (Gorizia) and the other in Slovenia (Nova Gorica). Nowadays, Slovenia being the part of EU, this fact poses no problem whatsoever, since the only way to "feel" the border is to read the billboards and road signs which are in different languages on each side of the border.
Together with Kras region to which it borders in the south, Nova Gorica area (Goriško) is well known for its good wines and food. It is a place of both cultural and natural attractions but even more importantly, it is great starting point for orienteering and tourist activities. To the south, one needs only 30min (25km) to get to Adriatic coast and to the north it is no more than 45min (40km) to get to Tolmin, a town on Soča river and on the edge of Slovenian only national park - Triglav national park. To the east it takes about 35min on highway to get to Postojna cave. Last but not least, it takes just 2 hours (146km highway) to world famous city of Venice.
